Automobiles can be one of the most expensive investments that you make. It is important to spend a little additional money protecting that investment. Keeping the car running at its peak performance level can put a dent in the budget. Not keeping the car well maintained could end up costing even more or make driving the car dangerous. There are some car maintenance projects you should never miss.
Brakes – being able to stop can be an important part of your driving day. Giving your brakes all the attention necessary will help insure that you have the braking power you need when it comes time to use it. The braking system of a vehicle should be checked on a regular basis (at least every time the oil is changed or the tires rotated). Brakes also need to be checked if the warning system comes on. Other signs that there may be problems with the braking system include a squealing or grinding sound when using the brakes, a longer stopping time, or a pulling to one side of the other when the brakes are applied.
Tires – the wheels on the vehicle need to go round and round for the passengers to be safe. Keeping the tires well maintained is the second most important safety tip for your automobile (the brakes are first). It is important to have the right pressure in your tires at all times. The pressure of the tires help give the car more control around corners and even when braking. The wrong tire pressure can end up causing the tire to fail. Too much tire pressure can be just as much trouble as too little tire pressure. Use the tire pressure requirements set by the manufacturer of the CAR (not the tires). Some companies put the tire pressure requirements on the door posts and others have the requirements listed in the manual.
Rotating tires (moving the tires from one side to the other or front to back) can help to increase the lifespan of the tires by evening out the wear on the tread. Some tire companies offer free lifetime rotate and balance when you purchase your tires. If this is the case then you should have your tires rotated and balanced when you have your oil changed (or as often as the warranty provides).
Oil – too much oil and too little oil can both cause trouble for the engine. Oil levels should be checked after the engine has been stopped for awhile. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean. Put the dipstick back in and then check the levels. The oil should be close to the full line but never over it. The color should be transparent and light colored. Dark colored oil means it is time for an oil change. White oil means there is a problem in the engine that is allowing the oil and coolant to mix. Be sure to be on a level surface when checking the oil. Too much oil will actually keep the engine from getting the lubricant that it needs and the result can be a blown engine.
A great deal of time and money goes into choosing the right vehicle. It is important to put some additional time and money into making sure the car continues to perform at its top level and that it remains safe to drive. Skipping over any of the car maintenance that you should never miss could end up putting a dent in your budget or even worse. Protect yourself, your investment and your passengers by keeping your vehicle regularly maintained.
